The symposium, conceived as a collateral event to the exhibition Luigi Ghirri: Viaggi. Photographs 1970–1991, features four internationally renowned speakers.

Jacopo Benci, Larisa Dryansky, and Jonas Schnydrig will present the figure of Ghirri in brief presentations, followed by a discussion moderated by the director of MASI Lugano, Tobia Bezzola. The speakers will explore various aspects of Ghirri’s work, from the Italian context in which he lived and worked to the sources that shaped his poetic vision, from the influence of American photography to the redefinition of the Italian landscape. They will outline the profile of an artist who transcends mere documentation and aims not to "freeze" reality, but to narrate it, offering multiple possibilities to the viewer.

In the second part of the day, Giuliano Sergio will deliver a lecture on Ghirri’s role within the specific context of the Italian avant-garde, starting from the significance of the exhibition at MASI.

The event is free and it will be held in English for the first part (with simultaneous Italian translation) and in Italian for the second one (with simultaneous English translation).

Reservation for the event allows free access to Luigi Ghirri's exhibition throughout the day on Sunday 1 December.
