Ludwig van Beethoven
Ten Variations for Piano Trio on Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu, op. 121a
Piano Trio No. 5 in D major, op. 70 No. 1 Ghost
Piano Trio No. 7 in B flat major, op. 97 Archiduke
Beethoven's works for piano trio are the expression of the composer's best chamber music productions, from the early Ten Variations on the Lied Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu right up to the Trios op. 70 – the first of which is nicknamed "Ghost Trio" because it makes use of a theme that Beethoven had initially developed for a Macbeth opera he had considered writing – and the Trio op. 97, that Beethoven himself performed at his last public concert. Gautier Capuçon, LuganoMusica's Artist-in-residence this season, has been exploring Beethoven's production for a long time with his violinist brother Renaud on violin and pianist Frank Braley, with whom he recently recorded all of the composer's Cello Sonatas.
